 Visiting and Holidays in Snowdonia

The Snowdonia Mountains cover miles of beautiful and unspoilt countryside in North Wales. It is home to world famous castles, breathtaking coastlines and is the second largest National Park in England and Wales.

With a host of outdoor activities including mountain biking, walking, horse riding, fishing, golf and whitewater rafting to name just a few; you will be spoilt for choice. It makes the perfect location for any self catering holiday.

Snowdon is the highest mountain in England and Wales and known locally as Yr Wyddfa (The Tomb). Each year loads of visitors visit the mountain to either go hiking following the routes to the summit of Snowdon. These routes include The Snowdon Horseshoe, The Rhydd Ddu Track, The Snowdon Ranger, The Watkin Path, The Miners Track, The Pyg Track and The Llanberis Track.

Portmeirion Village is a nice place for a family day out. Overlooking Cardigan Bay on the coast of Snowdonia it has miles of sandy beaches and is surrounded by acres of sub-tropical woodlands. The village has several cafes, shops and is well known for its Portmeirion Pottery.

Snowdon Mountain Railway has been welcoming visitors since 1896 and is the highest Rack Railway in Britain. Your journey starts at Llanberis Station at the foot of Snowdon Mountain. On fine days the views from the train are breathtaking, to avoid disappointment it is worth pre-booking your seat.

Do not forget to visit the Llechwedd Slate Caverns near Blaenau Ffestiniog and explore the heritage of the Victorian Slate era. Visitors descend on Britain’s steepest passenger railway and take the Deep Mine tour. Entering through the side of the mountain the journey takes you into the early Victorian past and features some spectacular caverns.

Another beauty not to be missed is Barmouth Harbour, a pretty fishing village with a ferry and pleasure boats that take you across to Fairbourne. It is a traditional seaside village boasting a land train that runs the length of the promenade, amusement arcades and donkey rides.

These are just some of the places to visit in the Snowdonia National Park. It makes a perfect base for a family holiday and features a host of self catering holiday establishments.
