Popular Area - Northumberland
Northumberland National Park is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty situated close to the Scottish Border in Northumberland just south of Hadrian’s Wall.
It’s a perfect base for walking, cycling or visiting ancient castles, archaeological sites, Roman landmarks and prehistoric monuments including Pele Towers.
Northumberland has a wonderful coast with golden sandy beaches and home to some rare and endangered wildlife. During the winter months you may be lucky enough to spot some Grey Seals which breed on the Farne Islands.
There is also the nature reserve on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. This is a place that you can drive across at low tide and enjoy the beautiful coastline and pretty scenery.
Within Northumberland there is also the North Pennines (Britain’s first UNESCO European and Global Geopark). Here the hills are covered in heather and all types of rare plants and wildlife can be found here. Many walkers, horse riders and cyclists come here to enjoy the quiet trails and bridle paths that cover the pretty moorland.
The Pennine Way National Trail covers 286 miles of farmland and moorland from the Peak District, the Yorkshire Dales and over Hadrian’s Wall to the Cheviots and is probably one of England’s most popular walking trails.
Fishing is popular in Northumberland particularly trout fishing on the Derwent Reservoir or the River South Tyne which is on the border with County Durham also a popular spot for all types of water sports.
Another of Northumberland’s greatest attractions is Kielder Water & Forest Park, great for both families and individuals where there are forest walks, mountain bike trails and water sports.
Within Northumberland there are probably more castles than any other county and dramatic locations including Dunstanburgh, Chillingham, Bamburgh, Warkworth and Lindisfarne. There are many attractions in Northumberland including Alnwick Castle, Alnwick Garden, Howick Hall, Chillingham Castle and gardens at Cragside, Wallington Hall, Chesters Walled Garden close to Chesters Roman Fort and Paxton House to name just a few.
