The Plas Dolau Country Estate is set in 25 acres of peaceful countryside in the heart of the Rheidol Valley just 3 miles from the sea and the bustling University town of Aberystwyth, with the untouched wildness of the Cambrian Mountains stretching away to the East.
Our Guest House is a modern Swedish farmhouse, providing comfortable quiet accommodation with views across the valley and fields. We provide bed and breakfast, with evening meals and packed lunches by arrangement. The family room has en-suite bathroom and interlinked room with full sized bunks and a cot. There is one double, one single and two twins upstairs and a downstairs twin en-suite. All bedrooms have colour TVs and tea and coffee making equipment and there is a comfortable lounge with TV and video. We have a small selection of mainly children's videos and a number of board games etc.
The West Wing of the mansion has three bedrooms, en-suite family room, double and family room sharing a bathroom. The "farmhouse" kitchen is fully equipped with Aga, gas cooker, microwave, dishwasher, fridge and use of freezer space.
We share the estate with an abundance of wildlife, wild flowers, plants and ancient trees. Find space to stop and relax, walk and explore, or get out and experience the countryside around us. Close by there are opportunities for world class mountain biking at Bwlch Nant Y Arian, pony trekking in the Rheidol Valley, walking the coast path or wildlife/dolphin watching/fishing trips in the marine nature reserve of Cardigan Bay.
Our Country House Hostel situated amongst the trees and old gardens provides warm and comfortable accommodation for groups and individuals. Family rooms and dormitories sleep up to 45. With two kitchens and lounges, it adapts well to large and small groups. We have full central heating, plenty of bathrooms, toilets, pleasant decoration and Fire Certificate.
The lounge-dining room has an extending table and a sitting area with colour TV, video and piano.
A downstairs washroom provides an extra shower and loo with access from outside for additional guests in tents or caravan.
The Main House five dormitory rooms mix bunks and some beds. The Fern suite sleeps 18 in interlinked rooms with a washroom area containing 3 showers, 3 loos and 3 washbasins with an extra 3 washbasins in the bigger bedroom. The Jade, Primrose and Rose rooms have, respectively, bedspaces for 3, 6 and 12. Each has its own washroom with loo and washbasin and extra washbasins in the Rose room. These three rooms share two showers and a bathroom with shower over bath and an extra loo. Small groups can be allocated exclusive use of part of the washing facilities.
The main kitchen has 2 commercial cookers, deep fat fryer, large fridge and use of some freezer space. We provide a basic continental breakfast for everyone and can do cooked breakfasts and other meals, including packed lunches, or partial self-catering. Groups using this kitchen should have someone with a food hygiene certificate and we can provide some supervision for use of commercial equipment.
The dining room has comfortable chairs and go-pak tables and can also be used for craft activities. The lounge is our biggest meeting room, with easy chairs, TV, video and a small grand piano. The foyer provides a seating area, tea making and tuckshop (by arrangement.) The games room has table tennis, snooker/pool and board games etc.
The grounds include a small farm, mainly pasture grazed by cattle and sheep, with a couple of ponies and goats. (We can provide grazing and sometimes stabling for your own ponies). There are wooded lanes for walks and it is usually possible to provide an area for ball games etc. The two cottages are sometimes available. We plan to restore the old gardens, allowing space for barbecues, other outdoor activities and ample parking, including room for coaches..
Wild habitats to explore include mountains and moorland, forests and meadows, peat bogs, rivers, estuaries, sand-dunes and rock-pools. We are inn the Rheidol valley, reknowned for red kites and otters. There are always rabbits and squirrels with both foxes and badgers on our land, many species of birds and a summer bat roost.
For entertainment, there is a leisure centre and swimming pool within two miles. A smaller leisure centre at Clarach is ideal for younger children. There is horseriding, trekking, golf (9 and 18 hole) and both sea and freshwater fishing. We can forward a leaflet on local attractions and the Aberystwyth Tourist Information Centre has an abundance of useful literature about other local attractions.
Shopping for food and other supplies is easy, Safeway, Kwiksave and Booker are all within 2 miles. Aberystwyth has a range of shops and a variety of local crafts.
An ideal location for exploring Mid and West Wales. Plas Dolau is in the country just 3 miles from the coast at Aberystwyth.
Easy to find, the end of our drive being on the A44, half a mile West of the A4159 turning linking to the A487 North, and one mile East of the mainline railway bridge. Signs point to Y Gelli and all visitors should book in there first. Plas Dolau is on the same drive.
Open all year, the mansion is suited to a wide range of groups. We have hosted special needs children, a German church choir, school and youth groups, walkers and fishermen and family reunions.
